Pilates: The New Fitness Mantra

by | Jan 28, 2020

Pilates, a form of exercise which emphasis on our core strength and concentrates on strengthening the body. This exercise helps in general fitness and our overall health.

Pilates is similar to yoga, concentrates on posture, balance, and flexibility of our body.  Moreover, the chances of injuries are much lower in Pilates as compare to other forms of exercises. You can practice Pilates at almost any gym or wellness center, or learn it at home with a book, DVD or online tutorial.

Pilates mainly focuses on the mind-body connection. While doing it, your mind needs to be constantly aware of your breathing and the way your body moves. Joseph Pilates, a former carpenter, and gymnast, developed this form of exercise in the early 20th century. He invented Pilates as an exercise program for injured dancers and soldiers.

He referred Pilates to his system of exercise as “Contrology” because it requires intense concentration for bodily control. Generally, Pilates is performed with only a floor mat and letting the body act as resistance. Some forms of Pilates also use equipment such as the reformer, which provides mechanical resistance.

Pilates is quite a challenging form of exercise and it may not be recommended if you have the following conditions:

  • Unbalanced blood pressure.
  • A slipped disk.
  • Severe osteoporosis.
  • A risk of blood clots.
