A cup of tea has lot of value in a diabetic’s life. They are so obsessed about using a sweetener only to cheat their life long companion (diabetes). Personally, if one is taking 5 to 6 cups of tea the use of artificial sweeteners can be justified, However If one is taking only couple of cups of tea a day or a glass of milk then adding sugar free is just for one’s mental satisfaction.
2 to 3 spoonfuls of sugar a day means about 15 gms (about 60 kcals. It doesn’t make a significant difference if one is on a 2000-calorie diet.
We do consume portions of wheat, rice, bread, potatoes and the diabetic’s favorite papaya which are all sugars of different kind. But we are more concerned about a table spoonful of sugar in a cup of tea.
One can live in a world of oblivion where one consumes a few sugar free tablets in tea and on the other hand eat without realizing indirect sugars in the form of junk foods. Sugar is the basic need of our body specially brain. Our body needs a continuous supply of sugar all the time. If the supply is less then we feel weak and exhausted and if the supply of sugar is more than the required quantity then it gets converted in to fat. This extra load of sugar increases unwanted cholesterol and weight leading to many lifestyle diseases.
One can take a cup of tea with little sugar. But you need to take small 6 to 8 balanced meals full of proteins, complex carbs and good fats. Let every meal be of around 200 to 250 kcals every 3 hours. You can take any food. However, portion control is vital.
